promotes multi-disciplinary research in political economy through collaboration between centers in different academic institutions. Our goal is to facilitate the exchange and dissemination of ideas, and to help prepare the next generation of researchers in the field of political economy.
Political Economy is the field studying the reciprocal relationship between economics and politics. It mainly focuses on the behavior of non-market agents, such as politicians, voters, government agencies, judicial institutions, the media, and lobbyists, and their interactions with traditional market agents, such as firms and consumers. PE develops systematic frameworks for understanding such behaviors and interactions. These frameworks are then used to study the determinants of public policy both at the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels.
The UPPER network supports various initiatives: a policy brief series, a graduate research training program targeted at students from the global south, and various conferences and workshops.
UPPER is a joint initiative of the DC Political Economy Center (DCPEC) at Georgetown University and Johns Hopkins University, the Research Program in Political Economy at Princeton University, and the Leitner Program in International and Comparative Political Economy at Yale.
